"Thoughtful passage"

CHRISTMAS

Christmas comes but once a year
It brings joy happiness and cheer
That was in past ages I will now turn the pages
To show how different things are now
And why I have to wipe my brow.

Christmas Eve used to be
Full of excitement for you and me
Making paper chains with great pains
Decorating was such joy
For everyone man and boy.

Mother preparing all the veg
Keeping them cool on window ledge
Plucking the bird without a word
Feathers flying wide and high
Disappearing in the sky.

The house was alive with expectation
Watching all the preparation
Mistletoe above the door mulled wine ready to pour
The smell of baking brought us to the door
After one mince pie we wanted more.

Carol Singers sweet refrain
Fills our eyes again and again
These memories stay they don’t go away
This age old custom must never go
It really would be doom and woe.

Today is so different the spirit is lost
Cards and gifts appear early at incredible cost.
We are paying last year’s card which gets really hard
I know life goes by and time carries on
But I do remember the past that is gone.
